Knockdown Knits: 30 Projects from the Roller Derby Track

audiobook Knockdown Knits: 30 Projects from the Roller Derby Track by Toni Carr in Arts-Photography

Description

By the early nineties; singer-songwriter and former Blake Babies member Juliana Hatfieldrsquo;s solo career was taking off: She was on the cover of Spin and Sassy. Ben Stiller directed the video for her song "Spin the Bottle" from the Reality Bites film soundtrack. Then; after canceling a European tour to treat severe depression and failing to produce another "hit;" she spent a decade releasing well reviewed albums on indie labels and performing in ever-smaller clubs. A few years ago; she found herself reading the New Yorker on a filthy couch in the tiny dressing room of a punk club and asked; "Why am I still doing this?" By turns wryly funny and woundingly sincere; When I Grow Up takes you behind the scenes of rock life as Hatfield recounts her best and worst days; the origins of her songs; the source of her woes; and her quest to find a new purpose in life.

Most of these were done a few years back; given that the first interview is with the recently deceased Elaine Stritch as well two of the surviving leading ladies of Broadways Golden Age; Carol Channing and Angela Lansbury. Of course many of todays leading ladies are interviewed too. No mention of Bernadette Peters; Elaine Paige or Julie Andrews (although the last two are British and the focus here might be on American-born stars).1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Nothing Like Fascinating Ladies of the TheatreBy Kindle CustomerI thoroughly enjoyed this book and relished reading about the struggles; discipline and tenacity required for women to succeed on Broadway. The women are not always likeable; but one can relate to them easily through their unique points of view. Their lives and careers are fascinating and Insightful to those who enjoy live theatre but may not understand the full journey of how success is born there. These interviews help the reader to more fully appreciate the arduous task these actresses face in shaping a career in theatre.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful interviews!By danny costelloTo be honest; have of them are seriously neurotic nutjobs (and bitter!); but there is great truth in their words; however misguided their lives. Worth reading for anyone in the business who is looking to benefit from a series of cautionary tales.
