COLLECTION OF IMAGES OF MOSTLY MEDIOCRE PAINTINGS; WITH GENERALLY IRRELEVANT TEXTBy cigdem g.I made the mistake of trying to read this book; which apparently is a haphazard collection of Western still life paintings from the 17th to 20th centuries. After the initial pages where the text weakly complements the paintings being shown; the author continues with pages and pages of gushing compliments to Cezanne; while displaying his paintings in a very confusing manner; with the paintings of other artists juxtaposed here and there without explanation or relevance. Following her long tirade on the artistic virtues she sees embodied in Cezannes work; she then embarks on giving tidbits about the lives of various artists; with accompanying images showing mostly the works of Matisse; Derain and Picasso! Possibly one of the greatest still life painters of all time; Henri Fantin Latour is deemed worthy of representation with only one work in this so called book. Trying to read the text and to relate it to the images proved to be a frustrating loss of time. This book is only good for quickly perusing through its images and for that purpose; it is greatly overpriced. Cigdem Gokce; MFA
