Description

Recent years have seen enormous advances in the technology of concrete as a material; through which its strength; compactness and ductility can reach levels never dreamed of before. Thanks to these improved material properties; the strength and durability of concrete structures is greatly improved; their weight and dimensions reduced; the scope of concrete as a structural material is widened and ndash; despite the higher material costs ndash; overall economy is possible; with positive impacts on sustainability as well. Developments in materials and equipment; as well as new concepts; have lead to innovative construction techniques; reducing cost and construction time and making possible the application of concrete under extreme conditions of construction or environment. All these advances will be highlighted in the book by the top experts in the field of concrete structures; namely those currently active in the fieldrsquo;s leading and truly international scientific and technical association: the International Federation of Structural Concrete (fib) www.fib-international.org.Audience: Practicing engineers and firms; academics; researchers and graduate students; will all find the book timely; informative and very interesting.

Grab this book and some headphones and lets go on a trip!By Suburban MomzI never thought of Beatles music this way having only listened to them on CD through speakers. The author takes you on a tour through the albums explaining the finer points of each song that can only be heard through headphones. In a way; reading this book is like going on a scavenger hunt to find the nuances the author describes. I had fun with this book and my digital collection one rainy weekend. My only regret is that I cannot listen to the Beatles on vinyl or some other uncompressed format. This is a truly interesting and enjoyable read.9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. If you love the BeatlesBy Frank FisherIf you love the Beatles; this is a must-have book for you. So much has been written over the decades; it is great to get this new and refreshing approach. The authors idea of listening on headphones is novel and provides a mountain of new audio treasures to search for in their music. Some comments confirm our suspicions - like why John sounds nasal on "Anna" on the Please Please Me album. I confess to searching for my favorite songs at first; but I was soon too hooked and thumbed to the front and dove in. The author draws conclusions which I value. With so much of the Beatles history already written and re-written and re-re-written; Ive grown hungry for new thoughts and new insight on the fab four. What better place to stir up discussion than to listen to the source of our infatuation - their music.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Many errors. A big disappointment.By Beatles ScholarWhile the idea itself - focusing on the mixing aspect of each Beatles recording - is indeed a worthy pursuit; the amount of errors in this book is unforgivable. Some factual errors are simply inexcusable (many of them have been pointed out by other reviewers) and the attempt to use musical terms; when the author clearly is not a particularly knowledgable musician; is embarrassing; unprofessional; and raises many questions about the nature of editing that took place here; if at all. One example; which stands out as a not-sure-whether-to-laugh-or-cry moment; is the authors statement that attributes some of the musical character of I Am the Walrus to minor chords. In fact; the song is somewhat strangely famous for having no minor chords in it. Just one example out of dozens.
