Description

Often regarded as the last great composer in the Austro-Germanic tradition; Gustave Mahler (1860ndash;1911) exerted a major influence on 20th-century music; his later work in particular affected the musical ideas of such composers as Arnold Schoenberg; Dimitri Shostakovich; Alban Berg; and Benjamin Britten. While his mature work foreshadowed radical elements of modern music mdash; particularly the dissolution of tonality mdash; Mahlers first symphonies were written in a relatively traditional programmatic style with a strong spiritual element. These early works are seen by some critics as attempting to "establish some ultimate ground for existence in the face of pain; death; doubt; and despair." The composers spiritual quest; as well as the vivid orchestration; innovative symphonic structure; and rich emotional expression that characterized his music can be clearly studied and appreciated in this volume; which contains complete scores of Mahlers first two symphonies.Of the Symphony No. 1 in D Major ("Titan"); the Encyclopaedia Britannica notes; "The program of the purely orchestral Symphony No. 1 in D Major hellip; is autobiographical of his youth; the joy of life becomes clouded over by an obsession with death in the macabre "Funeral March in the Manner of Callot (basically a parody of popular music); which is eventually routed in the arduous and brilliant finale."Of Symphony No. 1 in C Minor; ("Resurrection"); Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians states: "Symphony II is a good example of all Mahlers works hellip; scored nearly always heavily for a large orchestra; restless and stormy in places; monumentally exalted in others."Now both works are available in this handsome; inexpensive edition; reproduced directly from the original editions published by Josef Weinberger in Vienna in 1897 and 1899. Beautifully printed with wide margins and clear noteheads; this edition of the symphonies offers an unparalleled resource for studying and enjoying the seminal works of a modern master.

Enjoyable and interesting book if youre into the history of folk rock and We FiveBy recordmavenWell-written; interesting book about We Five and the folk-rock scene of the mid-60s. Jerry Burgan covers the story; from the perspective of his experience and his many interviewees; thoroughly and entertainingly; but minimizes the gossip. The scope of the story stretches from the very beginnings of folk rock; through the progression to hard rock and beyond. The book describes; but doesnt dwell too much on; the various rifts that developed in the pressure cooker of fame and the rapid; manic progress from folk music to rock music on the West Coast from 1965-1967. If youre interested in the music of We Five and "You Were On My Mind" in particular; there are lots of good details about the group and the song; and Id highly recommend this book to you. Theres also a good synopsis of what happened over the years to all the various figures in the story.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Success and InnocenceBy Save the ElephantsBurgan and Rifkin layer Jerrys personal experience with the meteoric rise fall of We Five against the backdrop of the folk-rock explosion. Id always wondered what happened to Bev and why the band had dissolved before the second album was even in the stores. The book makes me realize how young the five (plus Chambers; the drummer; the sixth) were and how well intended; if misguided; their managers vision for them was. It tells the story with style and many meaningful; entertaining vignettes that; in the hands of another team of writers; might be blandly reportorial. For fans of the era; if not of the band; the book revisits a California and America in transition from bland; safe; but racist 50s to JFK idealism and assassinations of inspirational leaders. Within these shifts; we see the individuals hunger for creative freedom. Some readers may not identify with the race class of the group members; nonetheless; they can learn much about art; creativity; family; and how lifes unpredictable changes take people in directions even they cant make sense of.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I was thoroughly moved throughout.By Gregory E. SanchezOne of the most interesting; entertaining; and well-written books on the music scene I have ever read. Provides the fascinating back story to one of my three favorite bands from the 1960s; We Five (The Association and The Byrds; also mentioned therein; are the other two).If you were a teenager in that decade; the book surely will resonate.
