Landscape Ecology Principles in Landscape Architecture and Land-Use Planning

PDF Landscape Ecology Principles in Landscape Architecture and Land-Use Planning by Wenche Dramstad; James D. Olson; Richard T.T. Forman in Arts-Photography

Description

Conventional engineering solutions to problems of flooding and erosion are extremely destructive to natural environments. Restoring Streams in Cities presents viable alternatives to traditional practices that can be used both to repair existing ecological damage and to prevent such damage from happening.Ann L. Riley describes an interdisciplinary approach to stream management that does not attempt to "control" streams; but rather considers the stream as a feature in the urban environment. She presents a logical sequence of land-use planning; site design; and watershed restoration measures along with stream channel modifications and floodproofing strategies that can be used in place of destructive and expensive public works projects. She features examples of effective and environmentally sensitive bank stabilization and flood damage reduction projects; with information on both the planning processes and end results. Chapters provide: background needed to make intelligent choices; ask necessary questions; and hire the right professional help history of urban stream management and restoration information on federal programs; technical assistance and funding opportunities in-depth guidance on implementing projects: collecting watershed and stream channel data; installing revegetation projects; protecting buildings from overbank stream flowsProfusely illustrated and including more than 100 photos; Restoring Streams in Cities includes detailed information on all relevant components of stream restoration projects; from historical background to hands-on techniques. It represents the first comprehensive volume aimed at helping those involved with stream management in their community; and describes a wealth of options for the treatment of urban streams that will be useful to concerned citizens and professional engineers alike.

Re-enchanting the WorldBy katharinekIts a brilliant book which first presents an argument for why it is important to unleash our creative power individually but especially collectively and then in a very systematic way sets out a plan for doing so with groups of any size and any given set of demographics. It is so well written that I was led to believe that I too could undertake to facilitate groups in this manner. But upon further consideration; I realized that the expertise and knowledge the authors bring to the process make it "seem" easy when in fact it is subtle; deep; and very finely nuanced. The process needs to be learned and practiced. That aside; there are a number of small steps that anyone could take to improve a groups creative ability. I did one yesterday having a group make name tags for themselves with color markers and include on it the answer to "What is your connection to the arts?" It is a fascinating book. I highly recommend it.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A true gem that becomes invaluable referenceBy Manuel MaqThe art of gathering is one of the most neglected parts of our culture. So this excellent book feels like the long awaited; nourishing rain falling on parched soil.We spend a significant part of our lives working and yet dedicate minimal time to think; improve and bring creativity into the way we do work. And sadly the same happens with gatherings. Since ancient times humans gather around learning; problem solving; enjoyment; discussion; work; food.. We spend a significant part of our lives in all kinds of meetings; classes; workshops; meetups; festivals; reunions; .. And yet how rare; but how transformative; is to experience the magic of creativity; inspiration; healing and growth in a gathering. This book is an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to unleash the power of the arts to facilitate any gathering; of youth or adults; and turn a group of individuals into a fiercely engaged community of creators and world changers.
