Its a coffee table book of beautiful contemporary photographs as well as historic plans and scenes showing how a state with one of the most diverse natural settings has been developed by local residents and some of the countrys best known landscape architects. Its also an enjoyable read about the history of public parks and gardens Ive visited and many private estates and gardens Ill ever see but have heard about (like Martha Stewarts Skylands estate). It offers a rare panorama of landscape designs breadth; from cemeteries to subdivisions and industrial housing; and the charm each can exude when done well. And it will serve as a model for other states and other landscape historians documenting designed historic sites in their own locales.
