Landscape: Pattern; Perception and Process

ebooks Landscape: Pattern; Perception and Process by Simon Bell in Arts-Photography

Description

Mixed methods research techniques; combining both quantitative and qualitative elements; have become well established throughout the social; behavioural and natural sciences. This is the first book to focus on the application of mixed methods research in the movement sciences; specifically in sport; physical education and dance. Researchers and practitioners in each of these fields are concerned with the study of habitual behaviour in naturalistic contexts; and of the concurrent and sequential nature of events and states; precisely the kind of work that multi-method research design can help illuminate. The book is arranged into four sections. The first provides a thorough overview of mixed methods procedures and research design; and summarizes their applicability to the movement sciences. The remaining sections then offer detailed case studies of mixed methods research in team and individual sports (analyzing hidden patterns of play and optimising technique); kinesics and dance (analyzing motor skills behaviour in childhood; and the complexity of motor responses in dance); and physical education (detecting interaction patterns in group situations; and optimizing non-verbal communication by teachers and sports coaches). Mixed Methods Research in the Movement Sciences offers an important new tool for researchers and helps to close the gap between the analysis of expert performance and our understanding of the general principles of movement science. It is important reading for any student; researcher or professional with an interest in motor control; sport and dance pedagogy; coaching; performance analysis or decision-making in sport.

A labor of love and a public serviceBy Lee SlighThis beautiful book is part storytelling; part travel guide and part historical record and should be loved by anyone who loves Maine. It tells the story of all those places Ive seen or driven by a hundred times; plus the hidden jewels that justify a special trip. This book inspires me to get in the car with book in hand to see and understand anew.Meticulously researched and charmingly told; the book presents vast amounts of detail in a smooth style that keeps you turning page after page to get the next segment of the story. Filled with historical photos and fascinating old postcard views juxtaposed with lovely current photos by photographer Greg Currier. This book is clearly a labor of love and the product of many; many years of careful research. It provides a public service by preserving the stories while they are still fresh for the benefit of future generations and by inspiring us to preserve and renovate these special Maine places.2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful and engagingBy Peter MonroThis book is engaging on so many levels! Its a coffee table book of beautiful contemporary photographs as well as historic plans and scenes showing how a state with one of the most diverse natural settings has been developed by local residents and some of the countrys best known landscape architects. Its also an enjoyable read about the history of public parks and gardens Ive visited and many private estates and gardens Ill ever see but have heard about (like Martha Stewarts Skylands estate). It offers a rare panorama of landscape designs breadth; from cemeteries to subdivisions and industrial housing; and the charm each can exude when done well. And it will serve as a model for other states and other landscape historians documenting designed historic sites in their own locales. Anyone who visits Maine or wants to see superb examples of "how life should be" should latch onto a copy of this groundbreaking work.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
