Last Night a DJ Saved My Life: The History of the Disc Jockey

ePub Last Night a DJ Saved My Life: The History of the Disc Jockey by Bill Brewster in Arts-Photography

Description

While we have become familiar with the idea of "Bollywood" here in the West; we know little about the industrys films beyond a certain celebration of kitsch. Bollywood; the latest in Wallflower Presss Short Cuts introductory series; surveys this style of filmmaking from its origins in colonial times to the present; tracing its impact on both the Indian and global imagination. Chapters explore the history and workings of the industry; the narratives and aesthetics of its films; varieties within the genre; the cultural connotations of specific characters; its larger-than-life stars; and its hybrid and surprising fan cultures. Readings of popular and widely available films illustrate the importance of the cinemas conventions; which range from romantic clicheacute;s to a constant negotiation between tradition and modernity.

Too many bootleg songs were picked but still a worthwhile read.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A fun and detailed look at the catalogue of the poet with the guitar and harmonica!By G-ManThis book fits in a series by author Jim Beviglia; who has also written similar books reviewing the songs of Elvis Costello and Tom Petty. It counts down from #100 to #1; offering analysis of the lyrics and historical background of each song; which is identified by title and the album it appeared on. As a bonus; a list of the authors second 100 favorites; excluding analysis; is included. I am not a die hard Dylan fan (a Dylanologist; as the author calls them); but I enjoy enough of his music that I found this book to be very informative. I didnt agree with every one of the authors rankings or selections; but thats what makes it so much fun to read. Also; the commentary and historical background provided new information regarding these songs without being bogged down in too much minute detail. It made me take out my Dylan albums and listen to see if I agreed or disagreed with the author. For a music geek like me who usually reads the liner notes before listening to an album; this book was right up my alley. Maybe you wont agree with the author all the time; but how can you criticize a book that makes you want to listen to more music? Give it a read and youll be pulling out your vinyl; cassettes and CDs to dive into the deep catalogue of the man with the guitar (acoustic and electric) and the harmonica. Great fun!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good book but the Kindle version lacks something ...By Georgie GirlThis is a fun and interesting book for a Dylan fan like me. I read through it in a bookstore; and decided to buy the Kindle version; but first I had a free sample sent to me. To my dismay; there didnt appear to be a Table of Contents for the Kindle book; though there is one for the paperback. I cant see myself trying to read about the songs Im most interested in; or trying to navigate this book without the TOC. If there is one somewhere; please let me know. Ive rarely seen an e-book without a TOC; and especially not this kind of book. The other complaint Id make is the list is backwards; starting at 100. I get that; but it would be great if there were also a list at the end in the order 1-100; as this would be so useful. Back to the TOC topic; Ive self published on Kindle and its EASY to make s TOC. I cant imagine why it isnt included. Again; please tell me if there is one; but I couldnt see any hint of it in the free sample. Id really like to buy this book on kindle. Thanks.
