The figure of Julius Caesar has loomed large in the United States since its very beginning; admired and evoked as a gateway to knowledge of politics; war; and even national life. In this lively and perceptive book; the first to examine Caesars place in modern American culture; Maria Wyke investigates how his use has intensified in periods of political crisis; when the occurrence of assassination; war; dictatorship; totalitarianism or empire appears to give him fresh relevance. Her fascinating discussion shows howmdash;from the Latin classroom to the Shakespearean stage; from cinema; television and the comic book to the internetmdash;Caesar is mobilized in the U.S. as a resource for acculturation into the American present; as a prediction of Americarsquo;s future; or as a mode of commercial profit and great entertainment.

History of Classical music; not SwingBy Alessandra VasyutaI did not realize that this book was written specifically on classical musics use during wartime as opposed to popular music. I was actually looking for a book on the history of swing music; but as classical is my favorite genre; I still enjoy the book. It is especially enjoyable because it gives me so much more context to mid-century American/European composers; and re-listening to those pieces gives me that much more enjoyment. I would recommend this to anyone interested in Classical music; Swing; or the historical context to WWII and the Homefront during that period. Although it is a little dense; it is still very readable and Im enjoying it quite a bit over coffee on Saturdays with; you guessed it; the classical radio channel playing.1 of 5 people found the following review helpful.
