Small in size; big on contentBy Martin PWhile there remains little new to be said about an artist as revered and prevalent as Van Gogh; this book is brilliant at introducing or reacquainting readers with both the man and his works. Containing many of his best known paintings; including the `Sunflowers and `Starry Night...; the book also balances this with some of lesser known; but equally beautiful works; including some of my new found favourites `Cottage with Decrepit Barn and Stooped Woman; and `Le Moulin de la Galette. The book contains useful biographical information which paints a picture of a troubled genius; and which enriches the already well-known details of his life (such as the incident with his ear). The pictures are top notch in terms of quality and the highest level of detail has been placed on layout; to ensure text and image complement each other well. For those of you without a book on the Dutch master you could do a whole lot worse than buy this carefully chosen and well crafted book on Van Gogh.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Incredible Artist; Incredible BookBy Book WomanWhat an amazing book this is! The de Young Museum in San Francisco hosted in late 2010 an exhibit of post-impressionist masterpieces from the permanent collection of the Museacute;e dOrsay in Paris; prominently featuring some of Van Goghs best work--including his Starry Night over the Rhone; Portrait of the Artist; and Bedroom at Arles--plus much more. To see his efforts up close had a profound effect on me; and I grabbed this gem in the gift store on the way out. He had a short career; only about ten years; deeply troubled during that period by mental illness. (He not only cut off his ear as is well known; but fatally shot himself at age 37.) Yet during that relatively brief period he was prolific; leaving behind about 2;000 pieces of artwork that capture the viewer with their vibrancy and form more than 120 years later. Why this book works as well as it does is that it juxtaposes a paragraph or two about Van Goghs life on each left-hand-side page; facing on the right one of his masterworks that corresponds roughly to the text. [This gives you a sense of what was going on in his life as he painted each one; and it also shows the progression of his work.] Also on the left are given three small close-ups of important details in each painting; helping the unsophisticated eye to appreciate them more fully and to search out the nuances of which Van Gogh was so capable. Additionally; identifying information is given: the name of the painting; where and when it was painted; the type of paint used; the size of the canvas; and its current location. The small size of this book; about 6" by 6frac12;"; makes it very approachable and portable; belying the wealth that it contains. It invites the reader/viewer to learn more about this amazing artist. Grab it up; youll be glad you did.
