August Macke (1887-1914) was a master of German Expressionism; a movement which sprang up in the early 1900s with the intent to forego physical reality in search of its emotional counterpart; with a particular emphasis on expressing dark moods of tragedy and angst. Macke was a master of color and form; producing eye-catching canvases that evoke a strong sympathetic reaction in the viewer. He was equally at home portraying the sun drenched streets of Tunisia; the cloudy sky around the Bonn cathedral; and the faceless multitude of a crowded railway station. In this compelling text; Walter Cohen examines the brief life of an artist whose seemingly limitless potential was tragically cut short by his untimely death.

Gay who grew up in Millis Massachusetts has written a great new book about one of the finest family and school outing attractions in the Northeast USA. ldquo;Battleship Coverdquo;is located in the city of Fall River Massachusetts at the waterfront at the mouth of the Taunton River. It has on display one the worldrsquo;s largest collection of World War II naval vessels. The history of the battleship museum as told by Gays extremely interesting book is lively and there seems to be a black-and-white image on almost every page. I think this book should be popular with any visitor to Battleship Cove and any Naval ship enthusiast anywhere in the world. Gay concentrates some of the book on the battleship named after USS Massachusetts also known as ldquo;Big Mamiersquo;rsquo; by her WWII crew and many other people since then. Gay writes that the USS Massachusetts fired "the first and last 16-inch shellsrsquo;rsquo; of WWII. The first was during an exchange of fire with the Vichy French warship Jean Bart in 1942 and the last was in 1945 during the shelling of Japanese coastal targets. I strongly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in history and ships.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. this is one of the greatest ship museums in the worldBy Paul Danger KileI wish that it had current images. The Images of America series contains _historic_ photos and stories about various places in the USA; so they chose to use old images. At the same time; this is one of the greatest ship museums in the world; and full-color high-resolution images would be appropriate; and relevant; since the ships have been maintained in the same condition than they were in in-the-past.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
