Ive been reading "The Bard" since the sixth grade. Ive been reading critics who claim a man of Shakespeares status could not have written the work he wrote; that he must have been a fraud. What Schreyer does in this book is reveals that Shakespeare was a man whose work did not stem from the solitude of his own genius; but was birthed in past literature; plays and works he admired. He was; Schreyer shows; a well-read; well-versed man of the arts. Schreyers book proves that we do not have to discount the mans talent to say that he was an artist who was influenced by the works that came before him and the politics/art of his own time. A great read; and a truly enlightening book on a subject that was made new to me again.
