Competent but flawedBy OzArtiistThis is a sound introductory text to the history of the dominant streams of critical ideas about art in the twentieth century. So why only two stars? The books flaw is its failure to deal with the annoyingly persistent strand of figurative art; and easel art; through the 20th and into the 21st century. It also fails to consider the role of art markets and critics and historians continuing to write outside the dominant academic discourse. How could a book on 20th century art simply not discuss say Hopper; Freud; Kitaj - and why there is no adequate discussion of their influential work in that academic literature.A sound book for first year fine arts students and lay readers with an interest in the history of ideas but not to be read without access to a broader text.
