Able but episodic discussion pads some points of little significance and unaccountably fails to elaborate others." I must agree with Brown...this is an erratic and superficial study of an important subject. A good example of this failure to elaborate and seeming satisfaction with the superficial cited by Brown: " He [Brilliant] observes that only appearance is available to the artist; but also that to reflect inner character or soul a portrait must contain something more than the eterality of appearance There are several ways to work out this seeming conflict-or of arguing appearances inability to reflect soul-but none is sufficiently pursued." Unfortunately it is required reading for any scholar who wants to work on this topic.
