Georgian Treasure TroveBy Carolyn HahnThis is a wonderful selection of engraved images from the popular culture of the 18th and very early 19th century. Reading between the lines; theres so much to pick up about the culture of the time: every alphabet for children has some version of "J is for JEW;" or "old Clothes man" (same thing--Jewish peddler with sack over shoulder; etc). The Gin craze makes its way through the images (drunks; male and female); the lives of children make their way through in occupations (children as young as 4 were sold by their parents to masters who shoved them naked up still hot chimneys--images of small sorry "sweeps" weave in with images of children playing hoops; skating on frozen ponds; teasing animals--animal cruelty being slightly more recognized than child labor as a problem). As these were the popular images of the time; every type of domestic interior can be found: one room cottage with Mother Hubbard and her dog; tavern; street scenes. So much crafty graphic possibility! This book lends itself so well to scanning; cropping and filling in a new color or two to make the image pop. So; so worth the $--one of the best Dover books ever.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Lovely illuystrations!By Vicki EmbreyGreat illustrations!
