When did ladies where their gloves? When should they not wear their gloves? What type of gloves would one wear? As a writer; I want to know more about the Victorian era; so I was eager to get this book. And then I read it. The author goes into a lot of details on things I just dont care about. A perfect example would be in chapter three entitled: "Underneath the parasol" : Umbrellas as symbols of Imperialism; race; youth; flirtation and masculinity. To be frank; I could careless for the majority of the chapter and concentrated on the the flirtation aspect and youth. Do I honestly need images of "the umbrella worship of the Santal Hill peoples..."? No; I just want to read about Victorian things. I wanted a how to book on what a proper lady should do. I also dont need to know that Jonas Hanway was the first man to use an umbrella in 1756. Thats great for him; but this isnt the information I was looking for.The author has done their research; there is no question about that. However I felt there was too much research done and it was the wrong information. There were a lot of details about things the reader didnt need to know and I think thats what hurts this book in my opinion. If you want a how to book on what ladies in the Victorian era would do with their accessories then this isnt the book for you. If you want a lot of trivial information on Victorian accessories then this is your book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
