Mexican Indian Folk Designs: 252 Motifs from Textiles (Dover Pictorial Archive)

ePub Mexican Indian Folk Designs: 252 Motifs from Textiles (Dover Pictorial Archive) by Irmgard Weitlaner-Johnson in Arts-Photography

Description

This fascinating book is the product of intensive scholarly research; its exacting illustrations based on choice examples of Mexican Indian textiles in many different museums and private collections. Incorporating abstract and geometric forms as well as highly stylized images of flowers; plants; animals; birds; and humans; the patterns represent more than 20 major Mexican Indian cultures.Among the designs are a two-faced feathered serpent from the Huichol culture; an allover pattern dominated by horizontal zigzags woven by the Otomiacute;; and a flower and leaf design from the Tepehua. The Huasteco people are represented by a bold motif featuring prancing animals with bushy tails; a Nahuatl design depicts a lion with a flower in his mouth; while an elegant curvilinear Mazatec motif features flowers; vines; and birds. Other peoples whose art is represented include the Tarahumara; Tepecano; Mestizo; Zapotec; Mixteco; and Cuicatec. In the bold; startling designs originated by these cultures are primal links to the imagery of other cultures and traditions; centuries old and worldwide.Artists; designers; and craftspeople will value this modestly priced collection as a source of striking and unusual royalty-free designs for inspiration and practical use; anyone interested in Mexican Indian culture will find it an important reference as well.

I was a little worried about paying $45 sight unseen; especially since I had read a couple of very bad reviews here; but I wanted a keepsake of Thomas Kinkades paintings... so I took a chance. I could not be more pleased. As it has been said; the book is leather-type bound with beautiful illustrations on the front and back; and is filled with Thomas exquisite paintings of cottages; locations from the Western U.S.; various states and major U.S. and World Cities. I believe any Thomas Kinkade admirer would be thrilled to own this book; and I highly recommend it. I want to walk into each painting and live there for a while....0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Thomas Kinkade: 25 Years of Light ...By L Lee ParmeterThe idea of the Thomas Kinkade book is excellent and the price was right. The issue is the book was printed in China of very poor quality paper. many of the pages were stuck together; destroying many of the wonderful renditions of 25 years of light. I dont not recommend anyone purchase the book until goes back and look at the quality. L Lee Parmeter Author
