Brown is an excellent writer which makes the experience all that more enjoyableBy Larry DelingerThis is a detailed personal history by Carolyn Brown who danced with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company from the 1950s until the early 1970s. Its a part of the history of Dance; Music and Art that interests me enormously and Brown was in the middle of it; literally. So many of the Artists in the various fields appear: John Cage of course and David Tudor; Earl Brown; Remy Charlip; and on and on. Brown is an excellent writer which makes the experience all that more enjoyable. This is a wonderful book about those times.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great book -- But dont waste your money on the Kindle version.By KROCNYCDo *NOT* buy the Kindle edition of this book! Its poorly formatted; full of typos; and contains none of the many beautiful black and white photographs in the print version. The text has clearly been scanned in from a hard copy and converted to digital with absolutely no effort made to find and correct the many errors that are typical of such a process. Knopf either needs to spring for better OCR software or for some proofreaders. A decent spell-checker would have picked up the bulk of the errors; for heavens sake. Dates have been mangled; hyphens have been randomly inserted in the middle of words; spaces have been randomly eliminated from between words; the indenting used to mark lengthy extracts from letters; journals; reviews; and the like has been removed so that its impossible to tell when the author is quoting from source material and when shes offering her own take; and so on. To add insult to injury; the Kindle version is nearly as expensive as a new paperback; and much more expensive than a new hardback -- in other words; its a complete rip-off. Buy a used copy instead -- its worth it for the photographs alone.Carolyn Brown deserves more from her publishers than this botched edition of an otherwise four-star book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A terrific book! I read it when it was first ...By Frank GradyA terrific book! I read it when it was first published. Gave my copy to friend and insisted that she read it. I bought another copy last May to give to a dancer friend. Required reading if you care about the creative process and the life of the artist. And Carolyn Brown is a talented writer.
