EdwardsI come to urban design through community building and neighborhood activism; and so Irsquo;ve always tried to read the great source authors mdash; Jane Jacobs; Kevin Lynch; Holly Whyte. So while not entirely a newbie to the idea of design in the urban context; Irsquo;m not a practitioner. I start with this qualification only to say that Designing Urban Transformations has something to offer those of us that want to be engaged in our communities and the processes in which they are designed; built; and rebuilt.Designing Urban Transformations offers practical suggestions for implementing and evaluating the work the projects built in our community. I appreciated the interdisciplinary prospective that Inam offers; drawing from diverse sources in western philosophy to theater improv on real case studies. What I gained from this mix was a new way to understand how urban designers; architects; politicians and developers often oversell development projects. By focusing on measurable outcomes; Inam avoids the tendency within the growth machine apparatus to focus on beautiful renderings and idealized versions of how people function in the built environment.Not to suggest that this book overall message isnrsquo;t positive. While skeptical of developers promises; Inam offers a series of case studies; chosen from around the world; both big and small; of what has worked and how it did. By including only examples of positive transformation; Inam offers hope to those of us frustrated by traditional paradigms but still want positive outcomes for our communities. Designing Urban Transformation is the leading edge on how the practice of city building; activism; and design will respond to the post-Lynch; post-Jacobs; post-Whyte understanding of cities and places.
