It fails to explain in depth the origins of his distinctive sensibility; his roots in silent German cinema; how exactly he benfited from the Hollywood studio system.The analysis of the American comedies is decent but not particularly profound. William Pauls definitive book; Ernst Lubitschs American Comedy is more insightful and informative.Also; the focus is more on Lubitschs output and career; and noe enough info is provided about his personality and private life.Like many other biograpgies; this one centers on masterpieces; while neglecting the other films. Though admired by directors and critics; Lubitsch also made pictures that were not distinguished.Eymans book will be more useful for readers who do not know much about the director.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
