My TWP Plays presents five important plays written by Jack Winter while he was resident playwright at Toronto Workshop Productions; one of the first great troupes of the experimental and alternative theatre movement. The carnivalesque style of the selected works in this anthology reflects the turbulence; contradictions; and subversion of the social revolution during which they were written and first produced; as well as the cultural politics at a time when Canadian artists were investigating new; noncolonial; and distinctly Canadian forms of expression that would define the nation and challenge received artistic styles and practices. Extensive notes by the playwright and a foreword by the director and dramaturge Bruce Barton (University of Toronto) illuminate an important two-decade period in the evolution of contemporary Canadian theatre; while providing glimpses of the artistic conditions; the cultural environment; and the personal circumstances within which the works were created. Before Compiegrave;gne (1963) wildly imagines Joan of Arcrsquo;s final days. The Mechanic (1964) and its experiments in form and staging offer a contemporary take on Moliegrave;re and the commedia dellrsquo;arte. The Death of Woyzeck (1965) dismantles; reconstructs; and rewrites Georg Buuml;chnerrsquo;s famous fragmentary original of 1837.Ten Lost Years (1974) presents a highly theatricalized full-length dramatization of Barry Broadfootrsquo;s collected interviews with Canadian survivors of the Great Depression. You Canrsquo;t Get Here from There (1975) examines Canadarsquo;s complicity in the 1973 overthrow of Chilean president Salvador Allende.

As a beginning guitarist; the simplified melodies are easy to pick out and the chord designations make accompanying the melody a joy. But this book will be a favorite. Most of the songs in this collection are classic (read "really old"). Were talking the Gershwin brothers; Cole Porter; and other composers that took jazz out of the smoky night clubs and dropped it smack in the middle of Broadway and elevated jazz to the legitimate concert stage. Even better; most of this collection is familiar to the most casual of music listeners. The larger fonts and notations make it really nice for my aging eyes. No; it is not a spiral or comb-bound; but you can press it flat enough to sit on a music stand. And more importantly; while these arrangements are simplified; they do serve to inspire one to tackle the tunes and songs in their original key-signatures. I really like this book; and I heartily recommend any of the "Easy Fake Book" series.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This book Stepped Out of A Dream to lift a song title!By Victor Lee BurkeFor guitarists; this is a wonderful way to enjoy these standards because every song is in C. For those guitarists who have struggled to play the classics in E flat or B flat; you will find this book a blessing. I dont always agree with every chord change but in general; these are superbly arranged. For those guitarists who like to combine leads and chording this book is like seeing the Midnight Sun: exquisite!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Too small. Cant print.By W. A. TurnerThe Kindle version seemed like a convenient way to have music books. But the page is only about frac34; of the screen area - difficult to read when its on the music holder.More annoying; even though I bought the book and theoretically own it; its not possible to print the pages so theyd big enough to read it.If I can figure out Kindles Byzantine return process; Ill be getting my money back.
