In this new media age the screen has replaced the book as the dominant medium of communication. This dramatic change has made image; rather than writing; the centre of communication. In this groundbreaking book; Gunther Kress considers the effects of a revolution that has radically altered the relationship between writing and the book. Taking into account social; economic; communication and technological factors; Kress explores how these changes will affect the future of literacy.Kress considers the likely larger-level social and cultural effects of that future; arguing that the effects of the move to the screen as the dominant medium of communication will produce far-reaching shifts in terms of power - and not just in the sphere of communication. The democratic potentials and effects of the new information and communication technologies will; Kress contends; have the widest imaginable consequences.Literacy in the New Media Age is suitable for anyone fascinated by literacy and its wider political and cultural implications. It will be of particular interest to those studying education; communication studies; media studies or linguistics.

Well-known artists from a range of countries; excellent illustrationsBy Ole GadeGiven the objectives of the volume; i.e. exemplification of the different methods; and materials used in street art (paint; stencil; 3D; miniatures; etc.) the author did a credible job in illustrating its variations across a number of countries (hardly the world); while also engaging and illustrating the work of some of our leading artists. Focusing on artististic conception of some current human condition; the author illustrates by works of artists like blek le art; c215; evol; shepard fairey; eva; gaia; blu; roa; jimmy c; os gemeos; and others. A rather monumental task done quite well.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great overview of this universal and democratic art form!By J. CrawfordThis is a wonderful look at the most current street art being created worldwide at the moment. From the large scope stencil works that cover a building wall; to the minute works that go no larger than 6" and have to be discovered at the base of an outside wall on a city building; Hunter chronicles it all. Some political observations; some just creative and ironic statements about urban life; this book serves it all up.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. for teenage boy.By mariBought this for a teenage boy for a gift.
