Native American Dance Steps

PDF Native American Dance Steps by Bessie Evans; May G. Evans in Arts-Photography

Description

This well-researched book provides details of the varied steps that certain groups of Native Americans have used to express their dance ideas mdash; from skips; jumps; and hop steps; to an Indian form of the pas de bourreacute;e. Similarities to Oriental dances; classical ballet; Spanish and Russian variants; and steps in other dance forms are also considered. Examples are given of Indian dance music; words; and descriptive sounds that accompany this music; and the choreography of certain typical Indian dances of the Southwest. Authentic illustrations by a Native American artist depict dancers; while outline figures characterize steps and postures. An inportant addition to the libraries of anthropologists and students of Native American culture; this classic will be invaluable to ethnomusicologists and choreographers.

One of my favorite things about the book was that it was written before Kurt committed suicide; so you get a better picture of what things were like for those guys back then; without the colorization of this life-ending event. I believe another reviewer hit it on the bullseye when he said that other biographies paint Kurt too much as a tragic figure; instead of the relatively normal human that he was; because they see his life only through the lens of his suicide. There is a short afterward from the author that comments on the suicide.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I like that it includes interviews from other people who confirm or disprove some of the stories; or describe them from other perspectives. Its also very meaningful because Kurt Cobain was still alive when most of this was written. What I was disappointed with; however; is just one sentence; in the final chapter (which was added after Kurt Cobains suicide) where the writer says that not one NIRVANA song ends on a fade-out (what about Negative Creep?!). Considering the writer was a friend and supposedly knew them better than us fans; Im surprised hes not familiar with their music.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Worth the readingBy Enter name hereThis is a great read on Nirvana. Ive read "Heavier than Heaven" and whats so good about "Come As You Are" is you get to read the quotes by people who werent included much in Heavier than Heaven. For example; there are many quotes from Kurts mom which are so good to read. Even Kurts dad is quoted several times. I guess after Kurts death; the family decided not to discuss Kurt or at least; go on the record. I cant blame them. Id want my privacy as well and theres no telling what might happen. People could start accusing the family and you really dont want to open your mouth and set yourself up for trouble. If you want to know of Nirvana; Id get this book because it is so very good. Great job; Michael.
