Nefer: The Aesthetic Ideal in Classical Egypt (African Studies)

PDF Nefer: The Aesthetic Ideal in Classical Egypt (African Studies) by Willie Cannon-Brown in Arts-Photography

Description

This book provides an original treatment of the concept of good and beauty in ancient Egypt. It seeks to examine the dimensions of nefer; the term used to describe the good and the beautiful; within the context of ordinary life. Because the book is based upon original research on ancient Egypt it opens up space for a review of the aesthetics of other African societies in the Nile Valley. Thus; it serves as a heuristic for further research and scholarship.

Im not always sure artists are the best sources...By DeniseAs am artist myself; I often find that we artists write anything that makes sense only after we have the hindsight to see what we were doing. This collection almost proves that point single-handedly. I bought this collection mostly because I wanted a translation of "Du Cubism" by Metzinger and Glieze. Whether the translation is just difficult or the original French is also as difficult; I found it a bit revisionistic and clearly a defense of the Cubism movement. I should have stuck with Apollinaire. Kandinsky; a clearly a more prolific writer; is much more enjoyable. Overall; the words of the artists of the period are interesting; but better information about their art and process can be found elsewhere unless one is looking for the words of the artists themselves.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A BOOK EVERY ARTIST SHOULD OWNBy William J. Havlicek; PhDThis greatly expanded edition of a classic text is a monument for those who wish to grasp the premises of modern art and the ways in which modernity spread its influences abroad. The selected statements by essential leaders of the movement are organized systematically so that the reader can follow the steady progression and elaboration of ideas from one thinker to another. In this way the items read somewhat like and extended narrative. It informs the reader by its very structure and what one takes from this lesson is invaluable in understanding the idealism and vision of some very great thinkers and makers of modernity. William J.
