Netsuke Japanese Life and Legend in Miniature

DOC Netsuke Japanese Life and Legend in Miniature by Edwin C. Symmes Jr. in Arts-Photography

Description

The art of fortification had reached a high state of development even at the dawn of history. Powerful military works; dating from the remotest periods; have been found in Asia Minor; in Greece; and in the basins of the Tigris; the Euphrates; and the Nile rivers. The medieval castle; with its strategic; crenellated ramparts and aura of legend and romance; represents perhaps the most familiar form of a long-crucial art. This concise; scholarly volume traces the history of the castle from its ancient roots in the Levant; through Roman times and the Middle Ages; to the fanciful chateaux of the sixteenth century. Profusely illustrated with nearly 200 photographs; floor-plan diagrams; and pen-and-ink renderings; Castles explores innovations in castle design; siege operations; artillery; and other weapons; living conditions within the castle; and clearly explains intriguing features of construction: moats; baileys; keeps; donjons; barbicans; double curtains; loopholes; and many others. In addition; noted historian and fortification expert Sidney Toy takes the reader on a detailed guided tour of over 120 of the most famous castles and fortresses of Europe and the Middle East. Explore Caernarvon Castle (associated with the Princes of Wales); Dover Castle; Arundel Castle; Hadrians Wall; the Tower of London; the famed city of Troy; and dozens of others in vivid accounts focusing on the architecture; offensive and defensive modifications; and historical importance of each structure or site. Castle enthusiasts; medievalists; military buffs; travelers; and anyone interested in the evolution and development of the castle will find this meticulously researched overview an informative and absorbing account.

Probably should have had a treble clef euphonium player proof-read the illustrations. Some illustrations show the fingerings for the concert pitch; others are for the Bb transposed pitch. Not consistent. (Example- page 54 vs. page 55).The historical discussion is interesting.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good Fundamental InformationBy A. LawlessPatterned; I think; after Philip Farkas book entitled "The Art of Brass Playing;" this book employs those fundamentals specifically toward the tubist and/or euphoniumist.Harvey Phillips is a well-respected tubist and pedagogist who has collaborated with William Winkle; another well-respected but perhaps less well-known educator and tubist; to explore and present those facets of essential low brass performance.Embouchure study; breathing; articulation; along with the physics of each instrument are studied. For teachers and students alike; this is a valuable resource.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Just as describedBy Dr. SchtickThis short book is just as described and its authorship is about as authoratative as they come. Its a bit dated; in that all sorts of innovations have been made in tuba and euphonium design since its writing. Im only a serious hobbiest; not a professional tubaist; (I am a rabbi by profession;) so the book is just interesting reading for me. Nice and very practical technical advice; reading helped me remember ways to keep a lid on sloppy playing habits Ive developed over the years playing in non-demanding community bands and the like. For a one volume; inexpensive book; its a great value.
