Principles of Small House Design and Frank Lloyd WrightBy Rood AnderssonFlaggs book; Small Houses; was in the library of architect Frank Lloyd Wright (to this day the volume remains in the WWPeters Library at Taliesin West).Several of the concepts illustrated by Flagg were used by Wright in his designs for the Usonian House beginning in 1932. For instance ... natural ventilation through high ceiling vents. Wright was familiar with the concept of natural ventilation; as illustrated in the original kitchen and milk tower at Taliesin of 1911; but Flaggs 1922 book seems to have prompted Wright to make the tall; massive chimney-like kitchen and bathroom mass a prominent feature of the Usonian House.Additionally; the origin of Wrights artistic use of concrete and stone walls; termed "desert masonry"; used abundantly at Taliesin West and elsewhere; beginning in 1939; undoubtedly originated with Flagg.Rood0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great BookBy WNI really enjoyed this book; it covered a broad range of interesting topics to do with homebuilding and some construction methods. The book was written a long time ago but lessons can still be learned especially about modular construction. Plus the drawings are very beautiful pen and ink renderings. The houses are all timeless and well designed; beautiful while practical. I enjoyed this book because I like smaller houses that have character and charm and are smartly built to reduce wasted material and money. I hoped to learn some tried and true design lessons from the past that may have been forgotten or not taught today. This is by no means a technical book though it is inspirational and offers good content.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
