I have a dedicated room that I use for studying bass and other music. I have a pretty hefty PC for audio/video processing and a 42" monitor to make things easy on my old eyes (I wear glasses with bi-focals). I would have given this book a 5 star rating if not for a few things....Lets start with 5 stars:Pros: This is by far THE best exercise book Ive ever used for bass guitar. I take bass lessons and perform in a band. I have a pretty decent musical background. I studied classical piano for 10 years and one of the books my teacher added to my arsenal was A Dozen A Day by Edna Mae Burnham. These were technical exercises to help teach you skill; fluidity and technique on the piano. I was looking for a similar concept for the bass...without much luck. Ive bought a lot of music books for my bass with mixed results and usually find them tedious. They are generally not musically interesting and I eventually stopped using them. Practice/daily practice is key for becoming a really good musician! My bass instructor does give me exercises but I need something more I can do on my own.The exercises in this book are very well written. They sound like songs instead of scales/arpeggios. They are melodic - which is what makes them interesting. They sound good! After starting with lesson 1/exercise one and using a metronome; I can already tell that this will enhance my ability to finger the fretboard better. This is the current roadblock Im at thats preventing me from becoming a better bass player. The scores are written in notation and tab which is fine since I can do both. Exercises are clear and concise and right to the point. They do progress and each lesson technique builds on the previous lesson. They become more complicated as you go which should keep you challenged. Theyre still fun; tho!Removing 2 stars for the following:Cons:--You cannot resize the musical scores on the PC version. Even running on a 42" monitor; the notation appears small. You can resize the text but even at full screen; the scores are not resizable which makes it hard for someone like me (I wear glasses/bi-focals) to read without sitting on top of the monitor - which leaves no room for my bass. I may purchase the physical book and see if the scores are larger in print. I would have given this book 5 stars if not for this shortcoming.--The PC version does not play any audio - at least I cannot find where the audio files are. Another reviewer mentioned that MIDI audio examples are present on his/her tablet. I tried it on my Asus Transformer 10.1 Android and I cannot find any audio. I dont want to use this book on a tablet because the prints too small to be practical. This lack of audio examples might hinder someone who is new to reading music; not familiar with timing; etc.; and needs to know how a piece sounds so that he or she can get the timing correct. Im lucky thats not much of an issue but it could be to other people.Giving a star back - making it 4 stars for me:--One of the good things about the musical notation is the use of chord symbols. This makes these exercises look like the songs that they actually are. I was able to leverage these chords using Band In A Box. I made my own backing tracks for the first 2 exercises. I can play along with the backing tracks (since I dont have the audio in the Tablet/PC version) and adjust the tempo as needed and continually increase it until I can master each lesson.Overall; this is a great educational tool that has a ton of potential for helping you to get more comfortable fretting your bass and learning at the same time. I would recommend it for anyone who wants to improve their fingering. Again; having the ability to read music will help you get the most out of this book. Its worth the price I paid (many times over) and for the first time in 8 months; I have finally found a bass book that Im satisfied with!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not Geared for BeginnersBy Cheyenne AutumnDescription is deceiving; this is advertised as a beginner book but it is more geared towards intermediate to advance players. I previously purchased the Guitar Aerobics and found it to be an incredibly useful tool to advance skills. This book is nothing like that. Instead of the one skill per day approach that Guitar Aerobics takes; this has one lesson per week. Which; I think is an approach that could work; the problem for beginners is that they throw some fairly complex licks at you from the beginning. Chromatic runs and string-skipping for week one is a bit much for a beginner. You can get through them; but it is frustrating to the point that you probably wont even pick up the book. For intermediate to advanced players; you may find some useful practice exercises in this but for beginners I would suggest Blues Bass or the Hal Leonard Bass Method for beginners.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. its too bad the paper/cd version is almost twice as much because ...By jed clampettits too bad the paper/cd version is almost twice as much because the oroblem with the kindle edition is the tab itself does not get any bigger upon increasing text size; only the text enlarges. if you then use the zoom feature the backing track turns off. There are ways around this of course; using 2 kindles one for sound and one to zoom the tab and its that small that it does need some enlarging. its kind of funny the tab wont enlarge along with the text since it is a music book thats what youd probably want to be enlarging! I have run into this before though when it comes to music books and either sheet music or tab.another way to be able to see the tab might be to put a magnifier over the page...I guess I could return this within 7 days I think and get the book for an extra 7 something...I might. id take off more stars but dont want to critisize the book itself which does seem excellent from the few exercises ive checked out.
