Both are very good books but their focuses are different.Suskins book covers a larger amount of ground over many decades; with very basic information on shows written by major composers; but it is hardly comprehensive.Dietz on the other hand has done an excellent job of preserving every single Broadway musical (hit or flop) from the 60s (as well as many shows that closed on the road before making it to Broadway) and contains information on so many more shows than Suskin compiled in his own book. Any show that wasnt written by a significant composer is barely mentioned in Show Tunes; however even the most obscure shows in this complete book get over a page each on plot information; casts; song lists; recordings; and all other bits of trivia that I have not seen anywhere before. It may be a hefty price but its worth it for the comprehensive nature of the book. Its interesting but...By J. A. KawarskyAll the information can be found elsewhere...Showtunes by Steven Suskin has all this in it (different set-up). Scholarship is severely lacking in bibliography; lack of footnotes and what the primary sources are. Good for a librarys reference section. Need not own for personal library....takes up to much space.
