Dissecting philanthropy at the grass roots level and assessing effects after all these years.By Jim BliesnerDrs Cosio and Bussell have done an excellent job of analyzing the role and impacts of two San Diego charities; Price and Jacobs) on two respective neighborhoods. They effectively describe some of the way things were before they came and what they tried to do and provide even some reflection on the impacts (positive and negative).The heavy hands on approach of these two foundations are different even to allow comparisons. The point of comparison most telling is the level and content of community engagement. To what extend did residents share in the effort and the benefits of each? And therein is the reason to read the book. The assumption is that these patrons adopting low income neighborhoods is beneficial. Is it? What can be and have been the impacts of how they do it? How is it assumed that a foundation is equipped to intervene in peoples lives; all well intended; and do it with some skill; knowledge and "grow" the economic circumstances and the social systems of the residents. Can they do it better than government? What is the role of government as partner in these efforts other than an open purse? These two authors do an excellent job of weaving through opinions and facts; provide a very objective assessment and leave the reader with a lot more knowledge about communities; philanthropy and community development than might ever be imagined.I highly recommend this book to city planners; students of same; philanthropy staff and boards; as well as participants at the community level of any community revitalization effort whether headed up by non profit; government or other philanthropies which may be attempting to develop programming. Drawing upon years of research and very rich data; the book presents two detailed case studies that serve as instructive examples; with a strong comparative analysis of the two. The authorsrsquo; primary theoretical contribution is the application of systems theory to philanthropy in community development; something sorely missing in the field. Readers new to this area of research will appreciate the great historical account of foundation involvement in community development; and strong overview of various types of organizations and foundations in the sector and their modes of philanthropy. This book is very readable and will be useful to students; researchers; and practitioners whether new to the field of community development or experienced veterans.
