Imagining Resistance: Visual Culture and Activism in Canada offers two separate but interconnected strategies for reading alternative culture in Canada from the 1940s through to the present: first; a history of radical artistic practice in Canada and; second; a collection of eleven essays that focus on a range of institutions; artists; events; and actions. The history of radical practice is spread through the book in a series of short interventions; ranging from the Refus global to anarchist-inspired art; and from Aboriginal curatorial interventions to culture jamming. In each; the historical record is mined to rewrite and reverse Canadian art historymdash;reworked here to illuminate the series of oppositional artistic endeavours that are often mentioned in discussions of Canadian art but rarely acknowledged as having an alternative history of their own.

I never knew that music was played constantly in the concentration camps. The German soldiers actually obtained instruments and music for the musicians in the camps. The musicians were given more privileges of food and showers for themselves and their families. Music was even played while victims were being murdered and tortured. The musicians felt bad that they had to play music for such awful circumstance; but they had to play for their own lives.9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A book that will touch your soul.......By Babsy13I have read many books that deal with the Holocaust but I was unaware that there were "instruments of hope and liberation in mankinds darkest hour." For me; this book was fascinating and I loved every word of it because it taught me that the strength to endure the unendurable can come from music. This book is rich in everything that makes a book a treasure...love; history; bravery; and so much more. I urge you to read this exceptional book and to also visit the authors site at the following link http://www.jamesagrymes.comI recommend this brilliant novel to anyone who wants to learn more about the history of the Holocaust. Thank you Mr. Grymes.9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Violins of Hope: Purchased at .comBy depI have read Violins of Hope a few times now. The first time I was very disappointed by the book. However; after my second reading I changed my opinion. What I had been expecting from the book was more of a story about the violins being restored; more of the technical aspect I would say. The story is really much more about the original owner of the instrument and how it got to the point of being restored. To me; the musical part seemed rather overshadowed by the Holocaust part. I did end up very much liking Violins of Hope; the author did a very commendable job. As others have said; there must have been an awful lot of research done in writing this book.
