An interesting approach to Hildegard of BingenBy Michela PereiraJennifer Bain gives an original contribution to Hildegard studies; not only in the field of music - indeed; her work tackles a rather new subject; i.e. the nineteenth century revival of Hildegards fame in German Catholic culture. Bain extends her consideration both backwards and forwards; to the twentieth century women studies; in the double sense of nuns scholars in Sankt Hildegard Abtei at Eibingen; and of feminist appreciation of Hildegard as an especial example in womens history. Well written; it witnesses the authors lively interest in Hildegard and helps to situate the latter in European culture both past and present. Certainly interesting for historians of music and for Hildegard scholars; it may be read by a wider audience as an essay on the meaning of revivalisms.
