There has long been a politics around the way in which women are represented; with objection not so much to specific images as to a regime of looking which places the represented woman in a particular relationship to the spectators gaze. Artists have sometimes avoided the representation of women altogether; but they are now producing images which challenge the regime. How do these images succeed in their challenge ? The Emptiness of the Image offers a psychoanalytic answer. Parveen Adams argues that; despite flaws in some of the details of its arguments; psychoanalytic theory retains an overwhelming explanatory strength in relation to questions of sexual difference and representation. She goes on to show how the issue of desire changes the way we can think of images and their effects. Throughout she discusses the work of theorists; artists and filmmakers such as Helene Deutsch; Catherine MacKinnon; Mary Kelly; Francis Bacon; Michael Powell and Della Grace. The Emptiness of the Image shows how the very space of representation can change to provide a new way of thinking the relation between the text and the spectator. It shows how psychoanalytic theory is supple enough to slide into and transform the most unexpected situations.

Great book; the songs I wanted were not thereBy KhalilThe book is needless to say very nice; but I am disappointed that "Midnight blue" and "Chitlins Con Carne" are in there. In the description of the book "many more" is confusing; as well as one of the buyers who stated that the book contained them. I think we are talking about two different books in here. Please provide further details about the book you are selling.11 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Kenny Burrell - Transcriptions of Blues Based JazzBy D.R.L.~ This 104-page book; like other volumes issued in the Hall Leonard "Guitar Recorded Versions" series; contains transcriptions of essentially every note played by Kenny Burrell on 14 tunes. The transcriptions by Pete Billmann and Jeff Jacobson in regular musical notation as well as tab notation appear to be accurate and provide considerable insight into Kennys chord voicing as well his single-note line development.~ Since some of the tunes are written by Kenny; the transcriptions also provide insight into his composing and arranging skills.~ Highly recommended to any intermediate or advanced guitarist who wants to gain insight into the improvisational melodic and chordal style of one of the best musicians to every play the guitar.~ I have listed below the titles of the tunes that are transcribed in the book as well as the name of the CD that the original Kenny Burrell version of the tune upon which the transcriptions are based.
