Description

For as long as people have been migrating to London; so has their music. An essential link to home; music also has the power to shape communities in surprising ways.Black music has been part of Londons landscape since the First World War; when the Southern Syncopated Orchestra brought jazz to the capital. Following the wave of Commonwealth immigration; its sounds and styles took up residence to become the foundation of the citys youth culture. Sounds Like London tells the story of the music and the larger-than-life characters making it; journeying from Soho jazz clubs to Brixton blues parties to Kings Cross warehouse raves to the streets of Notting Hill - and onto sound systems everywhere. As well as a journey through the musical history of London; Sounds Like London is about the shaping of a city; and in turn the whole nation; through music.Contributors include Eddy Grant; Osibisa; Russell Henderson; Dizzee Rascal and Trevor Nelson; with an introduction by Soul2Souls Jazzie B.

Dr. Coates walks the reader through the historical progression of democracies and their art from the Parthenon and Michelangelos David to Monets Water Lilies and the American West. For someone like me who is a student of government but lacks familiarity with art history; this book elucidated the link between democratic institutions of government and the unique art commissioned to represent them. I came away with a deeper appreciation for the political context of the great artistic works of history and the characters involved in their creation. An engaging book that tells the story behind the great artists that emerged from the great democracies...and how the world would likely never have known and enjoyed these creative giants without the political institutions that set the necessary economic and cultural conditions for their timeless contributions.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An enlightening taleBy QuinnThis book offers a fascinating tour of the people and places that were key to the evolution of democratic society over the last 2000 years. We need to understand this history now more than ever; with threats to modern democracy coming from the rise of authoritarian government from China to Europe. Why has Greek democracy persisted as an ideal? What was it like for small; underdog nations to fight the tide of autocracy; imperialism; and theocracy? This book is an original blend of biography; art history; and military and commercial history; that follows the path of democracy and liberal society from Ancient Greece through Western Europe to the United States. This is a must-read for anyone trying to better understand how we arrived at the present geopolitical situation and where to look for the next chapter in todayrsquo;s struggle between democracy and rising authoritarianism.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. reviews the creation of 12 great works of art in the setting of the political ...By James SawyerFascinating read; reviews the creation of 12 great works of art in the setting of the political climate and impact of democratic vibrant society on the creation of great art works.
