A True Classic of Americana (before it had a name).By Larry NagerThis is a great book; written by Stephen Cicchetti; better known under his stage name; Steve James.Great choice of tunes and a wonderful section on one of the true unsung heroes of both fingerstyle guitar and country music; the late great Sam McGee; from Sunny Tennessee; from where I am writing this review; just a few miles from Franklin; the namesake of McGees great Franklin Blues; which I learned from this book more than 30 years ago and still play today. BUY THIS! And steve should get it back in print. A classic.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Shines light on some lesser knownsBy Zelie NicBack in the day; Oak Publishing put out several really fantastic books in an era when fantastic instruction books were hard to come by. This is the book that really set me off finger-picking. I spent a week working through Sam Mcgees "Buck Dancers Choice" and that was it. A revelation. Some of the great things about this book is that it is steeply graded; starting out with easier concepts and songs and then working up to some of the more challenging numbers. The best part of the book though; is how it shines light on some lesser knowns and some who; despite being well know (Riley Puckett and Frank Hutchinson) have few transcriptions. Two of my favourites are Dick Justice and Lena Hughes. Lena Hughes "Queen of the Flattop Guitar" can be downloaded through and I cant recommend it enough. Her open-tuned parlour playing has so much in common with the Hawaiian slack-key tradition that you could imagine her having living in Oahu or some such.Somewhere; I still have a flexi-disc that came with my original copy.
