Now thoroughly revised and enlarged; this book offers the most comprehensive coverage available of all aspects of the production; reception; and reproduction of sound. Written clearly and concisely; all its chapters can be understood without specialized training in music; physics; engineering; or mathematics.Dr. Olson discusses the nature of sound waves; explains the division of sound into scale patterns and the traditional method of notating them; describes the individual characteristics of all musical instruments currently in use (including the human voice); shows how the ears hear; discusses concert hall and recording studio acoustics; amplification systems; etc; describes the elements of sound reproduction systems from the telephone to the stereo record player; and concludes with a new chapter on the production; development; and potentialities of electronic music.Under these broad headings; readers will find a close analysis of the way in which a violin produces sound; descriptions of carbon; crystal; dynamic; velocity; and unidirectional microphones; a comparison of the relative absorbency of 22 acoustic materials; building materials; and objects; a description of how music can be produced by a digital computer; and much; much more. Conductors will find suggestions on positioning their orchestras; performers will understand the dynamics of their instruments; recording engineers and acousticians will discover a remarkably comprehensive reference work; and music teachers; students; physicists; and enthusiasts in general will find easy access to a vast wealth of information.

EXCELLENT!By Grumple DumpleFirst; there seems to be a discrepancy with the picture of the songbooks cover shown above.I have posted a customer image of the songbooks actual cover (which is beautiful in and of itself).Obviously; the incorrect image above is from an earlier 3rd edition. Notice the old cover says over 200 songs... well; this updated edition now has 275 songs. Also; this book now has 231 pages as opposed to the 160 pages mentioned above under "Product Details".Edit 12/07/08: Ok... I hadnt checked in a very long time; but obviously has removed the incorrect image that I just made mention of... so you can ignore that part of this review.***I love this book!I am an amateur pianist and enjoy playing from this fakebook very much. This is a great selection of Yuletide favorites represented in melody lines; lyrics and chords.Seemingly; most of the titles youd look for are in this collection as well as a lot of lesser-known ones.I have listed the complete contents below. Please take care to make sure enough of your favorite Christmas tunes are listed there so that you dont regret buying the book.***I heartily and heartfully recommend this Christmas songbook to you!*** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** ***Contents:A Caroling We Go C MajorGrandmas Killer Fruitcake G MajorAll My Heart This Night Rejoices Bb MajorAll Through The Night F MajorAway In A Manger F MajorAlmost Day G MajorAn Old Fashioned Christmas F MajorAngels From The Realms Of Glory C MajorAngels We Have Heard On High F MajorAs Each Happy Christmas G MajorAs Lately We Watched G MajorAs With Gladness Men Of Old G MajorBaby; Its Cold Outside F MajorAuld Lang Syne F MajorA Baby In The Cradle Ab MajorBecause Its Christmas (For All The Children) C MajorThe Birthday of a King (Neidlinger) Ab MajorThe Boars Head Carol C MajorA Boy Is Born In Bethlehem A MinorBring A Torch; Jeannette; Isabella G MajorBurgundian Carol C MinorCarol Of The Bells G MinorCarol Of The Birds E MinorCaroling; Caroling G MajorThe Chipmunk Song C MajorCelebrate The Child Ab MajorChrist Was Born On Christmas Day F MajorChristians; Awake! As good as it gets for a Christmas leadsheetBy scm88keysThis book has a terrific selection of both old and new Christmas songs. It is very cleanly printed; easy to read; and the book is spellbound so that it sits open on any stand without a problem. As a musician who likes to improvise; having the melody and some basic chords is absolutely what I was looking for.I havent played through every song; but I have only found one chord so far that is definitely wrong; an obvious typo.Clearly; there are arguments that could be made about the rhythmic and harmonic choices made in several songs; but with dozens of versions of each song in existence; the publishers obviously had to make a choice and just go for what was either most popular or most accessible. Therefore; traditional songs you would find in a hymnal may be completely not how you would hear them in your head; but some modern songs like "This Christmas" is stunningly accurate to the most well-known version.Overall; a great book. The only problems; as listed above; are probably not ones that could be alleviated; due to the very nature of the material. If you want a specific version of a song; youll want to buy sheet music; but for basic reference or improvisational purposes; I cant recommend this enough.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. AWESOME CHRISTMAS BOOKBy JazzpianoI play the piano in an upscale Department store four nights a week. As the season changed to Christmas I didnt feel my old Christmas books would be good another year. I purchased this book and was very; very happy. This book (the 5th Edition) has everything in it. There are old hymns; childrens classics; old Christmas songs; new Christmas songs; Standard Christmas songs. It is a very; very good investment. The price (in my opinion) is very reasonable if not cheap. This book is a MUST HAVE if you play the piano at all and especially if you play in public and need to constantly be entertaining the public. You will not run out of Christmas songs to play if you purchase this book. The arrangements have good chords; are just long enough; and give you plenty of room to improvise and jazz them up; if that is what you want to do. I just ended the Christmas Season this year using it and never got tired of playing out of it. I actually continued to find more and more songs that I didnt know I knew the longer I kept using it. Very; very good investment. 12/2011
