Planning on the Edge

ePub Planning on the Edge by Nick Gallent; Johan Andersson; Marco Bianconi in Arts-Photography

Description

More than a tenth of the land mass of the UK comprises urban fringe: the countryside around towns that has been called plannings last frontier. One of the key challenges facing spatial planners is the land-use management of this area; regarded by many as fit only for locating sewage works; essential service functions and other un-neighbourly uses. However; to others it is a dynamic area where a range of urban and rural uses collide.Planning on the Edge fills an important gap in the literature; examining in detail the challenges that planning faces in this no-manrsquo;s land. It presents both problems and solutions; and builds a vision for the urban fringe that is concerned with maximising its potential and with bridging the physical and cultural rift between town and country. Its findings are presented in three sections: the urban fringe and the principles underpinning its managementsectoral challenges faced at the urban fringe (including commerce; energy; recreation; farming; and housing)managing the urban fringe more effectively in the future.Students; professionals and researchers alike will benefit from the books structured approach; while the global and transferable nature of the principles and ideas underpinning the study will appeal to an international audience.

Their Pictorial Archive series consists largely of images that are of art in public domain and I have often searched out my own design resources from books on history; archaeology; etc; finding a design on an antique Oriental carpet here and another on an urn there. This can be fun; like a scavenger hunt; but is a lot of work with many books or sources yielding only one or two inspirations and so I find these Dover collections of designs most valuable. With an eye to cost though; I do like to see inside the book before I buy. If I can find the book at the Library; I will check a copy out before making the decision of whether the book has enough potential inspiration to be worth the price; but many are not available in my community and so the Look Inside This Book feature played a big role in my decision to purchase this book. With 3;000 decorative patterns featured; there is a lot of bang for the buck in this particular book. Some of the newer Dover releases have color renderings that may be attractive to look at but harder to transcribe into a usable diagram as a design source and so I found the black and white line drawings in this book very helpful.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Terrific bookBy Joan WaffHaving a FB Ancient Patterns Tangling Group makes this group fun. We have monthly challenges using the ancient designs. Members are enjoy re-creating ancient patterns.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. useful; but not impressiveBy B. PereiraThis book was;useful for getting some designs; but they are crudely drawn and many are so similar that its hard to tell the difference. I had hoped Id be able to use much more than 9 out of 3000 designs.
