Planning the Twentieth-Century City: The Advanced Capitalist World

ePub Planning the Twentieth-Century City: The Advanced Capitalist World by Stephen V. Ward in Arts-Photography

Description

This book reveals the complex interplay of planning ideas and practices between local; national and international levels throughout this century. The book moves from German zoning; the aesthetics of grand urban and landscape design from France and the USA; and the utopian English idea of the garden city through to the dynamism of the Asian tiger cities and the environmental ideology of the late 20th century. It creates an international body of knowledge and expertise. With case material from major cities in Western Europe; North America; Australia and Asia; this book charts the changing centres of influence in planning and identifies the cities which will lead the way in the next century.

Review of Dovers Medieval Sketchbook of Villard de HonnecourtBy Carl F. Barnes; Jr.This book is a bizarre publication; a melange of two earlier editions. The introduction and captions are taken from the 1959 "facsimile edition" by Theodore Bowie (The Sketchbook of Villard de Honnecourt). The illustrations; called "plates;" are reproduced from the 1859 English "facsimile edition" by Robert Willis (not mentioned by name); itself a reproduction with additional commentary of the 1858 French "facsimile edition" of Jean-Baptiste Antoine Lassus (LAlbum de Villard de Honnecourt; architecte du XIIIe siècle). It is not acknowledged that the illustrations are made from photographs of lithographic renderings of the original drawings and are not photographs of the original drawings themselves.1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. fantastic period sketchesBy J.
