Portrayal: and the Search for Identity

ePub Portrayal: and the Search for Identity by Marcia Pointon in Arts-Photography

Description

From Niagara Falls in North America to Angel Falls in Venezuela; Victoria Falls in Africa to Hannoki Falls in Japan; waterfalls provide some of the worlds most spectacular scenes. Whether thundering cataracts or exquisite cascades; these astonishing natural wonders attract hordes of visitors each year. While waterfalls have often been considered in terms of their picturesque or sublime qualities; their rich cultural background has been neglected. In Waterfall; Brian Hudson portrays these marvels in a new light. He explores the many myths and legends that tumbling rivers and streams have inspired in cultures ranging from Native American to Celtic and Indian; and how they have been described by the poets and depicted in film and music. His examples of paintings by Chinese and Dutch Masters; the Hudson River School in America and in Britain by J.M.W. Turner; Thomas Girtin and others present a fascinating variety of approach and technique in artistic attempts to capture the wonders painters encountered. Waterfalls also influenced landscape architects; for artificial effects featuring cascading water have long been a staple of park; garden and even backyard design. Hudson also discusses the ecology of waterfalls and the conflict that arises from their importance as both a source of hydroelectric power and tourist income in many countries. Countless waterfalls have been sacrificed to lsquo;developmentrsquo;; and many more are currently under threat; as the demand for energy and water grows.A superb addition to the library of any nature lover; this beautifully illustrated book is a fascinating look at the history and value of waterfalls.

CD or Online Resources would have been grandBy TinfootThere are indeed easy and intermediate tablatures (with traditional notation)... they are intermixed; however; with far more intermediate (or advanced beginner) material than simplistic beginner (I only glanced through the book; judging from the tablature arrangements). Still; a decent buy; and I rather do like the short historical blurbs included with each selection. Would be fantastic though if there was a CD or an online site with music available as I naturally dont know these tunes at all. Makes it rather difficult to get a feel for a piece when all you have is playing it off a page.5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. ChallengingBy Gary T.I am an intermediate level player and I love renaissance style music. Blackmores Night is one of my favorite bands; and they other have peaked my interest in learning to play some of the old songs...I find the book challenging. Granted I sound no where near my guitar heros; but Im making progress despite my rebellious fingers...no I dont do the finger biting thing that the angry guitarist does in You Tube...LOL...but I slow way down.. and like the turtle in the Aesop fable...Ill make it to the mark...one laborious note at a time
