Post Critical Museology: Theory and Practice in the Art Museum

ePub Post Critical Museology: Theory and Practice in the Art Museum by Andrew Dewdney; David Dibosa; Victoria Walsh in Arts-Photography

Description

Pamela M. Leersquo;s New Games revisits postmodernism in light of art historys more recent embrace of "the contemporary." What can the theories and practices associated with postmodernism tell us about the obsession with the contemporary in both the academy and the art world? In looking at work by Dara Birnbaum; Ouml;yvind Fahlstrouml;m and Richard Serra; among others; Lee returns to Jean-Francois Lyotards canonical text The Postmodern Condition as a means to understand more recent art-critical interests in interactivity; collectivism and neo-liberalism. She reads Lyotards well-known treatment of language games relative to the game theory associated with the Cold War and the rise of the information society. New Games asks readers to think critically about our recent past and the embattled state of our contemporary preoccupations. With a critical introduction by Johanna Burton; New Games is the fourth and penultimate volume in Routledgersquo;s series of short books on the theories of modernism by leading art historians on twentieth-century art and art criticism.

Recently my friends and I attended his "What Makes it Great" performances here in Boston; the music for the day was "Pictures at an Exhibition" (one of my favorites). Well; it was so fabulous it is difficult to put into proper words. So; if he is performing near you - GO!!!!!!!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. fascinatingBy Don249Im not a musician. Dont read music; but enjoy listening to classical music. I enjoyed the way the music paints a picture with sounds; with emphases; tones and instruments. Didnt care much for the opera sections but now have more of an understanding of what is being presented.I really enjoyed being able to hear the music after and while reading the text.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. He makes a complex subject accessible to the lay person.Kapilow is very knowledgable about his subject and writes so that the reader shares his enthusiasm for the music he describes.
