Great Practicing Guide but perahps too detailed to be effectiveBy AnonymousIts a little over-detailed in what it asks students to record about their practice times (you are supposed to write down total time practicing and total time practicing each thing practiced.) But I like that it asks students to think specifically about what goal they are working on and asks them to record their current metronome tempo - it makes students more efficiently practice. Many students dont understand that you cannot simply play a piece start to finish over and over again and hope to make progress very rapidly and this helps me push students a little harder into learning how to practice. For both adults and children; Ive found that it takes a lot to get them to actually take your practicing advice seriously and use it whether because they are too impatient; think they know better; or just dont understand. This helps guide students through learning to practice and/or improve their practicing. (Im a piano teacher [...])That said; a teacher could accomplish the same thing by making their own template without the space for minutes practiced per item practiced. The book also provides a lesson planning/ assignment section for the teacher; which could be helpful to the teacher in organizing thoughts and more quickly and clearly communicating assignments; but its a little too detailed and doesnt leave enough extra room for writing things that dont fit in its boxes. So while; full of really helpful ideas that may not have occurred to some students and or teachers; this book might best be purchased by teacher and used to model teachers template rather than for each student. However; I have recommended certain students use it in the past and will probably continue to do so.For a less detail oriented and more economical assignment book; I like Lesson Assignment and Practice Record (However; for the record; I think it might be a bit more expensive here on ; as last time I purchased it; I paid $3; not $3.99 for it. Althought I just checked [...] and it was the same price (without prime shipping) as it was here; so who knows?).If you want to ask me questions about my review; find me through my website [...]Im a piano teacher with five years of experience teaching and a lifetime of experience learning.14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Nicely laid out; and asks the right questionsBy EbbersIt basically questions you about all of the things you should be working on. I always fill out my page for the week right after my lesson; when its fresh in my mind. Then its like having my teacher remind me of those little easy to forget things every single day! I also like being able to track what I have done. Gives a nice sense of accomplishment. Everyone should something like this for private lessons. How many times have you sat down to practice and wondered what the heck it was you were supposed to be striving for in a particular piece or exercise? If youre like me and feel like this almost everyday; then you need this. Nothing super fancy; but it keeps me a lot more organized and efficient. I feel like I make more of the time between lessons.6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Best planner ever !!!By JMcDI love this planner and now have all my adult students using it. Easy to take notes on what we cover in the lesson according to category. The student can then define the week by goals and focus on either what we covered or on what she/he wishes to review; depending on skill level.I personally use it and let each day define my next days practice. I can see by marking the time spent on each area exactly what I am practicing. I can correct my timing and/or the focus of my practice by looking at what constitutes my current pattern of practice. It is so easy to get lost and have 30 minutes go by involved in learning or playing a piece while neglecting other areas that are vital for improving piano skills. I love having this right in front of me in such a clear manner. It keeps me on track and well rounded. My students bring their planners to lessons and we can immediately see where they need to concentrate their practice for the week. It is so helpful. I highly recommend this book for all piano students and teachers.
