I recently set myself the project of reading all (well; most) of Ibsens plays; and when I read this version of "The Lady from the Sea;" I was beside myself with enthusiasm. This play seems to be impossible to find in standard anthologies of the playwrights work beyond those expensive ones issued by University presses. I cant recommend this play enough; and it baffles me as to why it has not found more of a life in performance. I dont know anything about the translators; and Ive never seen the show; but Id *love* to see it performed some day. I would even go so far as to say that there are many ways in which "The Lady from the Sea" is as powerful and fascinating a piece of theater; taken on its own terms; as "Hedda Gabler" is. GunsonThe Lady from the Sea is the best play I have read (including Long Days Journey into Night). Ibsen has managed to capture not only the character of the players in this drama but (for me at least); he has also created the light and feel of the coastal town where they live. I could "see" the entire play though his words. The house plays a central role and it was as if Ibsen has placed a photo in the minds eye that remains there long after the play is over. For anyone who has reservations about reading plays rather than seeing them; this is a wonderful of example of a play that is easy to read and very rewarding.
