Skip This Book and Buy Dov Simens "From Reel to Deal" InsteadBy Writer/Producer/DirectorA short book of only a few dozen pages which fails to cover any aspect of independent filmmaking in any useful depth or provide any particularly useful insights into film production. Id strongly advise you skip purchasing this book and use the savings toward one of the many better books on independent filmmaking such as Jason Tomarics Filmmaking: Direct Your Movie from Script to Screen Using Proven Hollywood Techniques or Dov Simens incredible From Reel to Deal: Everything You Need to Create a Successful Independent Film1 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The book excels at what it sets out to do: showing you how to make a film for $2;000By John C. DhaboltFirst; and most importantly; this book excels in what youre presumably interested in: making a feature film in a short period of time for $2;000. According to IMDb; Glenn has made six feature films. While you may or may not find Glenns films your particular cup of tea--my wife and I walked out on A ROOM WITH A VIEW in the 80s and it won three Oscars; so everyone clearly has different tastes--Glenn tells you how he made his films on a micro-budget and you can take that template and apply your own vision to it.The book is relatively short (it only took me a few days to read it in my spare time) but I didnt find it lacking in information. Glenns writing style was enjoyable and to the point. It was also refreshing to read Glenns views about the treatment of cast and crew members: he seems to sincerely care for those that have chosen to take the journey with him in making his films.Secondly; the one negative review I see as I write this clearly has a different view of filmmaking...but keep in mind its not shared by everyone; even some now making multi-million dollar films and television franchises. The reviewer states if you follow Glenns path to filmmaking "...you will never recover." But this exact style of filmmaking is what lead Trey Parker and Matt Stone to eventually create the idea that became the South Park franchise (this is according to Trey Parkers forward in Lloyd Kaufmans "Make Your Own Damn Movie!: Secrets of a Renegade Director")The reviewer also trashes Glenns approach of quickly writing scripts. He points out that Glenn wrote one of his scripts in less than a week and how because of this he has little respect for screenwriting. In the documentary TALES OF THE SCRIPT; Mick Garris (Hocus Pocus; Critters 2; The Fly II) discusses how he was hired to write a script for Steven Spielbergs "Amazing Stories" one-hour TV series; which he finished in three days. He was immediately hired to write additional scripts (9 total according to IMDb). On John Augusts (Big Fish; Corpse Bride; Frankenweenie) website he states he wrote the blockbuster Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (over $206 million gross) in three weeks. So it would appear that some others that are extremely successful would agree with Glenn that you dont necessarily need to spend months or years writing a script. Clearly the other reviewers style of filmmaking isnt invalid...its just a different approach.Like me; I suspect those seriously interested in filmmaking wont be relying on a single source of information. But if the thought of making a film for $2;000 is appealing; this book will tell you exactly how Glenn did just that...six times.1 of 2 people found the following review helpful.
