Description

I highly recommend a visit to both- and this bookBy Gene PisasaleBrian Andersons book "Fords Theatre" is a well written summary of this famous establishment and the event that happened there on April 14; 1865 when John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. Although hundreds of books have been written on this subject; Andersons book focuses on the theatre itself and the rich heritage of the establishment. The reader is led through the years of the structures origin and early function as a church; through the assassination and the decades after the event when it stood vacant. Its rebirth is described in detail; with narratives of the numerous activities held there all the way through recent years at the end of the 20th century. The segment describing the assassination is interesting and did provide some notable facts this reader was not aware of; however for a detailed description of the events that day; there are many other books which focus more strongly on these details. This book will be most appreciated by those who want to know more about what is now a national landmark. If you have not visited Fords Theatre in recent years; you will be pleasantly surprised. The Theatre and its sister venue the Petersen House across the street (where Lincoln died) both have superb exhibits and displays regarding the assassination and galleries devoted to the Civil War. These were very pleasant surprises to this reader; who visited them in December 2016. Their displays on the Civil Wat are not only excellent- they rival anything that exists at major museums around the nation. The two venues are self-supporting; a ticket to Fords Theatre gets you in to the Petersen House. I highly recommend a visit to both- and this book.
