Protestants and Pictures: Religion; Visual Culture; and the Age of American Mass Production

PDF Protestants and Pictures: Religion; Visual Culture; and the Age of American Mass Production by David Morgan in Arts-Photography

Description

In this lavishly illustrated book; David Morgan surveys the visual culture that shaped American Protestantism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries--a vast record of images in illustrated bibles; Christian almanacs; childrens literature; popular religious books; charts; broadsides; Sunday school cards; illuminated devotional items; tracts; chromos; and engravings. His purpose is to explain the rise of these images; their appearance and subject matter; how they were understood by believers; the uses to which they were put; and what their relation was to technological innovations; commerce; and the cultural politics of Protestantism. His overarching argument is that the role of images in American Protestantism greatly expanded and developed during this period.

Helps your average person to comprehend photography to depths beyond just fundamentals without getting lost in technical details; which can often loose a great portion or your audience. Clear; Simplistic and easy to follow. Formatted so that anyone can quickly reference their desired question by directly jumping right to it. Covers a wide range of photography tools ranging from equipment choice; shooting the basics; to subject choice and lighting. Describes to your average person how to creatively utilize your tools for given effects and lighting conditions. Of particular interest was the section that discussed and compared the difference between film to digital. I liked the "key points" in each chapter; and the "sticky notes" that really help you "Focus" On Photographing People. Well done!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
