A book that crosses many borders and demands deep thinking in response to deep songwritingBy Keren4LMasciotras biography of John Mellencamp is one of the best pieces of writing I have read in a long while! In addition to learning more about Mellencamp (probably my favorite singer/songwriter) the information was delivered in the style of poetic philosophy. I have difficulty understanding the complaints about the book not being chronological and not wanting the information about Mellencamps music and its progression over the years - does one not grasp that the man and his music are one? ... that what he writes about are straight from his living experience and the issues he struggles with as well as those he has; often grudgingly; come to terms with in his own life? I so admire Mellencamp for his honesty about himself and the issues he struggles with; his deliberate tackling of social injustices; as well as topics that are still taboo to talk about in "polite" company (death; for example); the depth of his soul-searching and his humanity continuously surface in what he writes and sings. He is more than a troubadour; as Masciotra has dubbed him - he also has the grit; edge and depth of the Hebrew prophets - laying out injustices perpetrated by the state and individuals and calling all who hear him to return to the less-travelled road of justice and respect for the marginalized; the vulnerable and the disenfranchised. This will be a book that I will keep for subsequent readings - both Mellencamps songwriting and Masciotras writing contain insights and wisdom to return to again and again. I would recommend this book not only to Mellencamp fans but also to those who love good writing and to those who are attempting to carve out their own path and live a life of substance. The book graphically portrays the progressive development of John Mellencamp as both a singer/songwriter and most importantly; as a human being who has struggled and thrived. While Mellencamp sings that he fights authority and authority always wins; I am convinced that as long as we have poet philosophers and prophetic songwriters like Mellencamp and Masciotra Authority will eventually have to relent and honor the demands of the people.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
