Mahlerrsquo;s life was a remarkably complex one; his success as a conductor continually overshadowed by his craving for recognition as a composer. Recognition which never came in his lifetime. In this biography; the author reveals how Mahlerrsquo;s personality; his extraordinary life and his music are inseparable. New light is shed on his strange relationship with Alma Mahler; his wife; and on his turbulent love affairs. In Vienna; where he directed the Opera; Mahler was a prime target for rumour mongers. Nothing he did; whether private or public; escaped the attention of a Vienna avid for details of his personal life. The author portrays vividly the conflict which arose from the demands made on Mahler by his enormously successful career; and his desperate desire to pursue the creation of great music.Illustrated with portraits of the people who made up Mahlerrsquo;s world and photographs of places associated with him; this book unfolds Mahlerrsquo;s story with impressive psychological insight.

Photography at Its Most ArtisticBy Debbie Lee WesselmannThis stunning coffee table book of high-speed; high-detail photographs of birds on stark white backgrounds illustrates photography at its most artistic. Exotic birds are captured in flight; expressing their personalities; or displaying a single part of their anatomy -- a talon; for example; or an eye. Because of their sharpness; each photograph invites a close look; even with a magnifying glass; to see the details of birds as youve probably never seen them before. Whats most startling about this collection of photographs is their composition on the blank page that draws the viewers eye into the photographers unique perspective. Zuckermans artistic vision is unlike any other photographer Ive seen; and this originality gives this book much of its power. Of course; the individual subjects; from a scarlet macaw to a green magpie to a King bird-of-paradise to a snowy owl to many others; lend personality to every page. Because part of the art is in the white (or negative space; if you will) of each page; none contains text or page numbers; instead; theres a thumbnail index at the back to learn about the species represented in each photograph. This book makes the perfect gift for a bird lover or anyone who appreciates photographic art.-- Debbie Lee Wesselmann0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
