In the autobiography of one of the greatest thinkers of all timeBy Reid A MasselinkIn the autobiography of one of the greatest thinkers of all time; Ruskin explains how he was raised and educated; and the experiences and people that helped to form his character and his intellect. I am huge admirer of Ruskins writings and I found this book fascinating. Regarding education it is especially interesting to contrast Ruskins home schooling (based on correct pronunciation of the Bible; read for several hours every morning) with current methods of reading comprehension as employed in our schools.0 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Both his Art Criticism and his Social Thought had major influence. His autobiography was a late work; done after those he is most known for;"Modern Painting" "Stones of Venice" "Fors Clavigera" had already been written. By the time he was writing this he was troubled mentally subject to difficult brain seizures. It was between these seizures that he wrote this work.He announces at the outset that he will write about what has been pleasant in his life. The dark sides will be left out. So there is nothing about the scandal of his unsuccessful marriage. Nor is there the bitterness over the failure of his social ideas and projects to make the kind of headway he wanted them to.Instead there is a leisurely stroll through many of the fine moments of his life. In one instructive passage he describes a childhood visit by the sea. No activity ; not boating or swimming or sailing ; interests him. What he wants to do by the sea is to look to focus and look. And this he himself says is the key to the great analytic power of mind he would later be praised for. To focus and see into the detailed realities of things ; is his great strength. And it the things of the natural world more than any human relationships which are at the heart of his life and work.Still the book contains many well- drawn minor characters. Ruskin s skill as a draughtsman is also reflected in his writing. For me however the most conspicuous characteristic of the work is the tone which informs it. It is calm; placid and non- dramatic. And it seems in total possession of what it is telling.Ruskin does not tell us his life to be an example for us to follow. He is not Augustine; nor does he have his depth. He simply relates the reality he observes; his first principle being truth - telling which is a trueness to reality.Ideally this work considering Ruskins preeminence should be highly inspiring. However the very oddness in himself which Ruskin recognized and quietly proclaimed works against this.Ruskin tells us who he is and he is truly a one- of- a kind person; and one might add; literary genius. But this book does not take us into the higher realms of the highest art.
