Great interactive art book at low priceBy Pat former librarianMartin Kemp has given us the opportunity to look in close detail at the famous works of art he discusses by linking the small bw photos to museum quality color photos. In his lecture at Hay on Wye literary festival; he discussed the relationship between the artist; the viewer and the society in which the work was produced. He opens each segment with long quotes from authors of the period. As an art history student who suffered from color slides of poor quality in my first art history review class; this is a great use of the new technology. The art museums of the world allow us to view masterpieces but few beginning students know how to combine the knowledge of Professor Kemp with the art work. I could not make all the connections work but that is my own problem.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. terrible in many waysBy Marianaterrible in many ways:The black and white images absolutely fail to convey the selected worksThe author plugs in his own "unique" opinions in various unexpected moments such as "Kruger translates it into a shallow assertion of identity -probably a female identity [...]" p. 193Moreover; after his unfounded claims; he does not enter into and in-depth discussion and rather leaves the matter at that. Such as the ending of the "Modern Life" chapter "[...] the key moves were manifested most vividly in France in the last half of the nineteenth century. It is not easy to explain why."And that is it. He does not even bother to try to explain; it is simple not easy. The book uses bi-chromatic cartoons to try to convey humor; it fails.Every chapter begins with an extensive citation of some artist or art critic; however it is mostly left without comment by the author. Begging the question of why this particular text was chosen and how it adds to the discussion. These are just a few examples of why this book is so bad. I admire the noble effort if any art historian to write a survey book; but this is just not even adequate. If Profile Books had at least had the decency to print a colored book in nice paper I would at least be happy with my $12.95 spent in a nice art index; but the images have such terrible quality that I dont even have that consolation.
