Scenic Design and Lighting Techniques: A Basic Guide for Theatre

ePub Scenic Design and Lighting Techniques: A Basic Guide for Theatre by Rob Napoli; Chuck Gloman in Arts-Photography

Description

Transcultural Cities uses a framework of transcultural placemaking; cross-disciplinary inquiry and transnational focus to examine a collection of case studies around the world; presented by a multidisciplinary group of scholars and activists in architecture; urban planning; urban studies; art; environmental psychology; geography; political science; and social work. The book addresses the intercultural exchanges as well as the cultural trans-formation that takes place in urban spaces. In doing so; it views cultures not in isolation from each other in todayrsquo;s diverse urban environments; but as mutually influenced; constituted and transformed. In cities and regions around the globe; migrations of people have continued to shape the makeup and making of neighborhoods; districts; and communities. For instance; in North America; new immigrants have revitalized many of the decaying urban landscapes; creating renewed cultural ambiance and economic networks that transcend borders. In Richmond; BC Canada; an Asian night market has become a major cultural event that draws visitors throughout the region and across the US and Canadian border. Across the Pacific; foreign domestic workers in Hong Kong transform the deserted office district in Central on weekends into a carnivalesque site. While contributing to the multicultural vibes in cities; migration and movements have also resulted in tensions; competition; and clashes of cultures between different ethnic communities; old-timers; newcomers; employees and employers; individuals and institutions. In Transcultural Cities Jeffrey Hou and a cross-disciplinary team of authors argue for a more critical and open approach that sees todayrsquo;s cities; urban places; and placemaking as vehicles for cross-cultural understanding.

I found most of the projects in here to be things I will want to make. I made one of the bags with no problem at all; although I did find the instructions a bit confusing at one point. As another reviewer mentioned; the pictures in the instructions could be clearer. I did find that the projects would probably be too easy for people who have already done several projects before. Thus I would recommend going to the bookstore and flipping through the book before purchasing. If youve never used a sewing machine before and do not like the idea of improvising occasionally; I would recommend purchasing additional sewing books or having a friend handy since this is a project book and was not written to guide you through all the steps of sewing.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. There are some great and easy projects in here!By clridenhourI like sewing but Im not good at coming up with my own ideas for quilting. I am currently working on the throw quilt in this book and love how its turning out so far! The instructions are super easy for anyone to follow and the layout is simple yet the end result is a sophisticated-looking quilt. I was able to use most of the fabric I already had on hand since I tend to do a lot of my projects in the same color scheme. but Im already thinking of making a couple more for Christmas gifts. I would recommend this book for the beginner to novice quilter/seamstress.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Sew; sew beautiful!By I Read Dead PeopleThis book is wonderful! A blog friend of mine recommended it and I found it at my local library! I knew within minutes of perusing the library copy that I would have to have my own copy! There are "project" books and then there is this book!!! I would say that 90% of the projects in this book are appealing to me in both form and function. The instructions are thorough enough for a novice seamstress like me. Even my 12 year old daughter was interested in making several of the projects!!!When I ordered my book I also sent a copy to my sister-in-law who is a very accomplished seamstress because she saw my library copy on a visit over the holidays and had the same reaction to the books appeal!
