English villages conjure up rural harmony and a history of happy communities woven into the broader pageant of England’s past. But each of them has a different story to tell; and it is usually a vibrant and an interesting one—a long way from those histories that become mere lists of changing lords of the manor.Trevor Yorke; using his own colour illustrations and photographs; describes the changes that took place over the centuries; both through the buildings and the occupations of the people who lived and worked in them. So much of this change is still visible and; with a few directions and hints; you can learn to spot the clues by dating buildings and recognizing features in and around the villages today. The knowledge gained from this book will make each visit to a new village one of discovery; besides acting as an introduction to tracing the history of your own village.

Christian and Michelle BoylesThis is a wildly entertaining book featuring stories of no-namers; names better known for other accomplishments (John Dillinger; a couple of American presidents; Jack Kerouac); future MLB all-stars; and everyone in between. Rather than relying on the same photos weve all seen a million times; through his exhaustive research; Cieradkowski creates unique poses that almost leap off the page. The stories themselves are lively; often very funny; occasionally heart wrenching. This book was not meant to be an academic look back through baseballs storied history; but rather its more in line with shooting the breeze with your friends about ballplayers while sitting in the cheap seats watching your team play a businessmans day special.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Baseball Stories the Way they were Meant to be ToldBy SkyrraSsorcI bought this book for my mother; who is a huge baseball fan. She enjoyed the book so much that I bought another copy to give my boyfriend. The author; Gary Cieradkowski; has a huge depth of knowledge about baseball from the long conversations he used to have with his grandfather. The art that he has created for this book is absolutely stunning; and the stories are compelling and interesting. This is a great book to learn about all those baseball players who could have been stars. I would recommend this to anyone who was a fan of baseball;and the beautiful and romantic history of the players and the game.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
