Incredible insights for those working and training in the vein of Grotowskis methodologiesBy The Lab New YorkAs a current director and trainer in ensemble; physically driven theatre I found this book to offer many insights into the "why" behind Grotowskis work. When you come to see the principles he is researching matter more than the exercises; that the physical is merely a tool to unlock and free the mind/body to impulse; you gain a clearer understanding of how to more effectively work in ensemble theatre yourself. The chapters insightful and well organized; giving the reader a look into the full span and impressive range that Grotowskis work took in the course of his life. Having worked with Grotowskis proteges across New York; Wroclaw; London; and Italy this book was really the necessary tool in bringing together the many incredible facets in his work; from the performative and theatrical; to the paratheatrical; all the way to art as a vehicle. I found this book necessary in supporting my own research in training the ensemble actor in physical work for performance.Sara Moncivais; MAThe Lab New York[...]0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The most important Grotowski book to ownBy PubliusWith all due humility; I am someone who really knows quite a lot about Grotowski; and I will agree with the previous reviewer about the value of this book. Honestly; if you could only have one book on Grotowski; it should be this one. It is a more valuable book than the ever-famous "Towards a Poor Theatre." A major part of the reason for that is that it puts some historical rigor and critical perspective on Grotowskis career- something which it is difficult to discover by reading Grotowskis writing alone. Also; the post-theatrical periods are more than just interesting- they are pat that lead to the culmination of Grotowskis work- a path that went far beyond theatre into something which cant really be put into words; but; as Andre Gregory said; "Has something to do with living."
